Services for Young Adults

The Kerr-Tar Workforce Development Board partners with many agencies and businesses to prepare young adults ages 16-24 with barriers to employment for successful careers through a variety of services funded through the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA).  The intent of WIOA if to provide a systematic approach that offers young adults a comprehensive set of service strategies and closer link to the labor market.  Services are designed to provide preparation for post-secondary educational opportunities, linkages between academic and occupational learning, preparation for employment, and effective connections to employers in in-demand industries and occupations.  Activities used to achieve these objectives include:
• Career interest assessments, career development, and career guidance
• Job preparation and job searching
• Labor market information
• Resume Building activities
• Training opportunities and skill building for specific career paths
• Tutoring services and mentoring opportunities
• College preparation and college tours
• Work-Based Learning opportunities such as On-the-Job training, Internships, Work Experience, or Job Shadowing
• Leadership Development opportunities, including community service projects, that build responsibility and citizenship
• Cultural and educational field trips
• Counseling Services
• Financial Literacy Education
• Entrepreneurship Skills Training
• Supportive Services such as, but not limited to, transportation, child care, training accessories, incentives, or professional counseling
The diverse services offered through the region’s NCWorks Career Centers are also available for young adults, including:
• Computer resource rooms
• Labor market information like in-demand jobs, training or credential requirements, or salary information
• Access to specialized training or GED classes
• Basic skills assessments, Career interest assessments, and career guidance
• Access to Career Ready 101 and National Career Readiness Certificate (NCRC)
• WORKSHOPS like Resume or Cover Letter Writing, Interviewing, or skills for maintaining a job
